Despite an increase in bank accounts, Pakistan's credit outreach remains limited. Our private sector credit to GDP is just 14.8%, lagging behind countries like Egypt (30.8%) and Bangladesh (39%).

A mere 3.6% of Pakistanis have borrowed from financial institutions, placing us fourth lowest out of 145 countries, per World Bank’s Findex.

Pakistani women face heightened disparity. Only 3.28% have borrowed from formal sectors, and when they do, their average loan size (Rs40,393 in Q1-2023) is significantly smaller compared to men (Rs67,099).

Credit card ownership paints a similar picture: Only 13.1% belong to women by Q1-2023. That's just 1.4% of female account holders with a credit card by December 2022.
