Estimate from FBR's published rates; the DIRBS payment slip is the figure that counts.
How the estimate is worked out
The phone's customs value decides its band. Each band carries three fixed rupee amounts, and sales tax is charged as a percentage of the value.
| Customs value | Regulatory duty | Sales tax | Income tax | Handset levy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to PKR 8,312 | PKR 240 | 18% | PKR 100 | PKR 100 |
| PKR 8,312 to 27,705 | PKR 2,400 | 18% | PKR 100 | PKR 200 |
| PKR 27,705 to 55,410 | PKR 6,000 | 18% | PKR 100 | PKR 200 |
| PKR 55,410 to 96,968 | PKR 8,800 | 18% | PKR 970 | PKR 1,800 |
| PKR 96,968 to 138,525 | PKR 12,000 | 18% | PKR 5,000 | PKR 4,000 |
| Over PKR 138,525 | PKR 17,600 | 25% | PKR 11,500 | PKR 8,000, or 16,000 above PKR 193,935 |
The law sets these bands in US dollars, at US$30, 100, 200, 350 and 500. They are shown here in rupees at today's rate of PKR 277.05 to the dollar.
On a passport, within 60 days of arrival, the estimate is regulatory duty plus sales tax plus the handset levy. Income tax is not charged on a phone brought in as personal baggage.
On a CNIC, income tax is added, doubled if you are not on the Active Taxpayers List, and then a fine of 10% of the duty and taxes.
What this calculator cannot know
- What FBR will decide for a newer phone. Its rulings stop at the iPhone 16 and at 2023 Android models. For anything newer the customs value is our projection from the launch price, and it is marked as one.
- What Customs does with your exact unit. FBR lists some models in only one configuration. A different storage size may be assessed differently.
- The exchange rate Customs applies. FBR's values and bands are in dollars. We convert at today's market rate, and the official one can differ by a rupee or two.
- The sales tax base. We charge it on the customs value alone, as FBR's last published table did. No current document confirms it.
- How the fine is applied. The procedure says "prescribed fine" without naming it. We use the 10% set by a 2019 notification.
Two small charges are left out: a customs duty of PKR 250 a set that is widely reported as not applying to smartphones, and a 4% additional customs duty that, on our reading of the notification, does not reach phones.
How to get the real number
Register the handset through PTA's DIRBS portal, or dial *8484#from a local SIM. You give your CNIC or passport number and the IMEI, and the system issues a Payment Slip ID with the exact amount. Reach DIRBS through pta.gov.pk rather than a search result, because imitation sites exist.
Our guide to what PTA tax is made of explains each component, and why the figures published online disagree with each other.
PTA tax by phone
Each phone has its own page with every storage size, on passport and on CNIC.
