Most people in Pakistan already own gold and have never once thought of it as a portfolio. Treating it as an investment rather than an heirloom changes only one thing: what you buy, and what you pay above the metal.

What gold actually costs today

Pakistan quotes gold per tola, and one tola is 11.6638 grams. Purity is quoted in karats, and the karat is simply how much of the piece is gold.

Purity Gold content Per tola Per gram
24K 99.9% PKR 503,800 PKR 43,193
22K 91.6% PKR 461,813 PKR 39,593
21K 87.5% PKR 440,825 PKR 37,794
18K 75.0% PKR 377,850 PKR 32,395

Rates as of 13 September 2026. The daily figure is national, not city-specific — the Sarafa Jewellers Association converts the international dollar-per-ounce price into rupees per tola, so it moves on the world price and the exchange rate together.

The four ways in

Every route below gets you gold. What separates them is how much of your payment is metal and how much is somebody’s labour.

Route Making charge Best for
Jewellery 8-15%, above 20% on bridal Wearing it
Minted coins 2-3% Holding value, easy resale
Bars 2-3% Larger amounts in one piece
Gold savings plan Built into the plan Buying without the lump sum

Why jewellery is the expensive way in

Making charges are the jeweller’s fee for design and labour, and they are added on top of the metal. You do not get them back: resale is valued as weight times purity times the day’s rate.

So a 15% making charge needs roughly a 15% rise in the gold rate just to break even. A coin at 2-3% starts almost level with the metal.

The lump-sum problem

At PKR 503,800 a tola, the honest obstacle is not conviction, it is cash. This is why gold savings plans exist.

A gold committee spreads the cost over 6, 8 or 10 months and fixes the price at the start, so a rally partway through does not raise your bill. You receive a physical 24K coin at the end rather than a cash payout. Oraan Gold runs from PKR 6,350 a month and delivers an ARY-certified coin, free and insured.

What gold does not do

Gold pays nothing while you hold it. No rent, no dividend, no profit rate — the entire return is whatever the price does, minus what you paid above the metal to get in.

It also falls. On the day this was written the 24K rate was down PKR 1,600, and anyone who bought the week before was behind. Over five years the trend in rupees has been strongly upward, but a trend is not a promise.

Zakat on gold

Zakat is due at 2.5% of market value once you are above the threshold. The gold-only nisab is 7.5 tola, about 87.48 grams.

If you hold cash, silver or business stock alongside gold, the lower silver nisab usually applies to the combined total — which catches far more people than the gold figure alone suggests. Our zakat calculator does the arithmetic at the current rate.

Common questions

How to invest in gold in Pakistan?

There are four practical routes: jewellery, minted coins, bars, and a gold savings plan or committee that delivers a coin at the end. For value, coins and bars win, because making charges are only 2-3% against 8-15% on jewellery, and making charges are never recovered on resale. Whichever route you pick, check the day's rate first, confirm the purity in writing, and keep the certificate or receipt — resale value depends on proving weight and purity.

Is gold a good investment in Pakistan?

Gold has historically held value against rupee depreciation and inflation, and Oraan's own rate page notes it moved from around PKR 100,000 per tola in 2021 to above PKR 500,000 in 2026. But it pays no income — no rent, no dividend, no profit rate — and the price falls as well as rises. It is a store of value rather than a yield-producing asset, and it should be one part of a plan rather than the whole of it.

What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 21K gold?

The number is the purity. 24K is 99.9% pure and is what coins, bars and investment plans use. 22K is 91.6% and is the fine jewellery standard. 21K is 87.5% and is the most popular everyday jewellery karat in Pakistan, because the added alloy makes it harder and more durable. At the 13 September 2026 rate that is PKR 503,800, PKR 461,813 and PKR 440,825 per tola respectively.

How much gold is exempt from zakat in Pakistan?

The gold nisab is 7.5 tola, roughly 87.48 grams. If gold is the only zakatable asset you hold and you own less than that for a full lunar year, no zakat is due on it. Above the threshold, zakat is 2.5% of the market value. If you also hold cash, silver or business stock, the lower silver nisab usually applies to the combined total — a scholar is the right person to confirm your own position.

Should I buy gold jewellery or gold coins?

Buy jewellery if you want to wear it, and coins if you want to hold value. A 15% making charge on a jewellery set needs roughly a 15% rise in the gold rate before the purchase breaks even, because resale is valued as metal only. A minted coin at 2-3% making starts almost level with the metal price, and an ARY-certified coin with a QR code is easier to sell on because purity is not in question.
