Neo or Air

The Neo is Apple's laptop at a phone-chip price: the A18 Pro from the iPhone 16 Pro, a 13-inch 500-nit display, 8GB of memory and 16 hours of battery, for PKR 259,499. For writing, browsing, lectures and office work it is enough, and it is the cheapest new Mac ever sold here. The 8GB is the limit: heavy multitasking, large photo libraries and anything with a virtual machine want the Air's 16GB. The gap between the Neo 256GB and the Air 13-inch is PKR 180,500 on the official channel, or PKR 21,841 a month on a 10-month plan.

What an imported MacBook really costs

Laptops carry no customs duty in Pakistan; tariff heading 8471.3010 is at 0%. What applies is 10% sales tax at import and advance income tax under section 148 on the value plus sales tax: 5.5% for a filer, 11% for a non-filer. A US$699 Neo at today's rate of Rs 277.05 to the dollar is PKR 193,658, which lands at about PKR 224,740 for a filer and PKR 236,456 for a non-filer, before freight and the seller's margin. That is why reseller prices sit near PKR 221,999 and why Mercantile's PKR 259,499 carries roughly Rs 30,000 to 40,000 of warranty and margin. One laptop in personal use comes in duty-free in a traveller's baggage; a second, boxed one does not.

On instalments

Mercantile's own plan, through an HBL credit card, is Rs 18,750 a month over 12 months on the Neo 256GB with no markup, and Rs 22,083 on the 512GB. Oraan's plan needs no card: the Neo at PKR 259,499 is about PKR 31,399 a month over 10 months or PKR 57,349 over 5, and the Air M5 13-inch at PKR 439,999 about PKR 53,240 over 10. One fixed service fee, fixed at approval. How it works and how to apply.
